Over the course of the last year, and even maybe the last two years, I've felt like I've been stuck in a rut and not really going anywhere. I think one of the main reasons is that I feel like I personally had no concrete things I wanted to achieve, only that I wanted something different. Last night, I was laying awake at 2:30 am feeling pretty crappy, wondering how I can feel better. I've always known that there is only one person who can turn things around, but I decided that now is time to go for it. To do that, I've come with some concrete goals that I want to achieve in the coming year. With all the talk about year end lists and coming year lists I've decided to put down some things I want to achieve. Nothing to lofty, actually pretty small to most, but each one of these are things that I think will do a little part for me, and ultimately thats all that matters ;)
I hope by writing them down, and sharing them with the world, it'll help keep me motivated.
Concrete Objectives:
- Run a 5km race in 25 minutes or under. I've recently taken up running and its something that I actually like. My best time so far for 5km is 27 minutes so I have some work to do, but I think its doable and would make be feel pretty awesome. I would like to do more, but I think this a good first start.
- Go on at least two trips, one to a place I've never been in Canada, and one place out of the country. Canada is an awesome country and there are quite a few places I want to see, like Toronto, and anywhere in the Maritimes. I've never been very far outside of Canada, I've seen a few northern States, and I would like to get out a little further. Maybe southern/eastern/coastal US, or somewhere abroad...
- Learn to play at least 3 songs on acoustic guitar. In the summer, I picked up an acoustic guitar and practiced for a while, but ultimately my playing time tailed off...Its now taunting me every time I look at it, and I think one of the main reasons why I slowed down is I had no concrete objectives...
- Learn to cross country ski. This something I've wanted to do since I've moved to Ottawa. A lot of people out here do it, and it seems like a lot of fun.
- Try vegetarianism for one month. This one is a weird one, but I think there are a few people out there who think I'm weird ;) This is something I've been interested in trying, and it is a bit strange seeing I grew up a farm that raised beef.
A little bit loftier:
- 24 hour mountain bike race. Can either do this in teams or solo, and ultimately I would love to do it solo.
- Learn a new language. I would like to pick up either French or Spanish, enough that I could carry on a basic conversation.
